Oxythyrea funesta (Poda) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae)

• Central and South Europe: Italy, France, Malta
• North Africa: Morocco
• Transcaucasian (Russian plain)
• Asia Minor and Middle East

• Polyphagous insect on grapevine, wheat, rose, calendula, paeony, thistle, daisies etc.
• Wild Hosts: Carduus nutans, Centaurea solstitialis, Convulvus arvensis

Biology is very similar to Tropinota hirta Poda (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). It swarms later in the summer and doesn’t represent as great a danger to orchards as T. hirta. However, this species can cause significant damage to flowering grapewines and late flowering wheat. They favour heavier clay soils.
