FURTHER TYPE SPECIMENS OF TERRESTRIAL ARTHROPODS IN THE PRINCIPAL INSECT COLLECTIONS IN TASMANIA

T D SEMMENS
Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries, GPO Box 192B, Hobart, Tas. 7001

Introduction This lists previously uncatalogued type specimens of terrestrial arthropods in the main insect collections in Tasmania, and is supplementary to listings published in 1974 and 1984 from the Queen Victoria Museum and the Tasmanian Department of Agriculture collections.

Tasmania has four significant insect collections:

Of these, the first three have sizable numbers of type specimens. Green (1974), listed 90 species from some fifteen classes, including Insecta, which were held in the Queen Victoria Museum's collection in Launceston. McQuillan (1984b), listed 192 species of Coleoptera, in the Department of Agriculture's collection the majority of which were described by A.M. Lea.

Reported here are type specimens not previously catalogued. They complete the listing of types held in Tasmania. Included are:

  1. Insects
  2. Insect allies, and
  3. Relevant references relating to the species' descriptions.

The purpose of this paper is to list for future workers where and how many of these valuable type specimens are held in Tasmania.
