Silvester Diggles (1817-1880)

The pioneer entomologist of Queensland. Born Liverpool. Lived in Brisbane 1854-1880. Piano tuner and teacher of drawing and music. A founder of the Qld Philosophical Society (now Royal Soc. Qld) and of Queensland Museum, to which many specimens were presented. Sent many species of Queensland Lepidoptera and Coleoptera to Francis Walker and other for descriptions. First recorded the Wanderer butterfly in Australia in 1817. Mentor of Illidge.
